A Life Saved: Lions' Critical Care Center Provides Hope After Venomous Snakebite
Lion Jyoti Toshniwal
In regions plagued by venomous snakebites, timely medical intervention can mean the difference between life and death. Such was the case for Mrs. Renuka, a 20-year-old pregnant woman from Sukalvedhe tribal village in Junnar, India. After a venomous snakebite left her in critical condition, she was fortunate to receive treatment at the "LIONS - Dr.Jal Mehta Rural Critical Care Center" in Narayangaon. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of renowned toxicologist Dr. Sadanand Raut and his team, Mrs. Renuka not only survived but also gave birth to a healthy baby girl. Let's explore the incredible work carried out by this center and the impact it has had on countless lives.
The Critical Need: Snakebite Deaths in Western Maharashtra:
India has the unfortunate distinction of being the capital of snakebite-caused deaths, with western Maharashtra, particularly Junnar district and surrounding areas, witnessing an alarming increase in cases. Most victims are impoverished young workers, children, and women. Venomous snakebites from cobras, Russell's Vipers, Common Crates, and Saw-scaled Vipers can be fatal, leading to permanent disabilities, comorbidities, and kidney failures that devastate families.
Addressing the Crisis: The LIONS - Dr.Jal Mehta Rural Critical Care Center:
Recognizing the urgent need for comprehensive medical care in the region, the Lions Club of Shivneri - Junner, Dist. 3234D2, with support from LCIF and the Dr. Jal Mehta Foundation, upgraded the Critical Care Ward of Vighnahurta Hospital in Narayangaon in 2004. This transformation enabled the provision of essential facilities such as cardiac monitors, ventilators, kidney dialysis machines, a cardiac ambulance, and a team of renowned experts, including toxicologist Dr. Sadanand Raut and Dr. Pallavi Raut, along with highly trained paramedical staff. The center's mission is to achieve "Zero Snakebite Deaths" by providing free or low-cost treatment to victims.
A Beacon of Hope: Transforming Lives:
The impact of the LIONS - Dr. Jal Mehta Rural Critical Care Center has been nothing short of remarkable. The center has treated over 6,000 cases from three districts within a 100 km radius, achieving a 100% survival rate with minimal comorbidities. This facility also places a strong emphasis on public awareness programs and training for local doctors and paramedical staff. The expertise of Dr. Sadanand Raut, a senior Lion Leader from Dist. 3234D2, has gained recognition at the World Health Organization (WHO). Looking ahead, the center has plans to establish an Advanced Snakebite Treatment, Training, and Research Center to further combat this pressing issue.
