Congenital heart disease (CHD) affects a significant number of children in our country, and providing them with the necessary medical intervention is crucial. Recognizing this pressing need, Lions clubs have partnered with KIMS Hospital to offer free cardiac surgeries to economically challenged children living with CHD. This collaborative effort aims to give these children a chance at a healthy and fulfilling life.
Addressing the Prevalence of CHD:
CHD is a serious condition, with approximately 10 out of every 1,000 births in the country being affected. This means that over 200,000 children are born with CHD annually. Among them, one-fifth are likely to have a severe birth defect, commonly referred to as a "Hole in the Heart." These infants require immediate medical intervention, even at weights as low as 800 grams to 2.5 kilograms.
The Role of KIMS Hospital and Lion Dr. Bhasker Rao:
To provide the necessary medical care, an intensive care unit (ICU), a team of doctors, and specifically, a pediatric cardiac surgeon are essential. Recognizing this need, Lion Dr. Bhasker Rao, the Managing Director of KIMS Hospital, has stepped forward to offer complete intensive care services. With a modular operation theatre and the expertise of renowned pediatric cardiac surgeon Dr. Anil and his team, the hospital has become a lifeline for children in need. The hospital covers the costs of the ICU and nursing, with only the surgery requirements, amounting to 25,000/-, being taken care of by the Lions clubs.
Saving Lives and Bringing Joy:
Cardiac procedures for children are often a one-time effort that enables them to lead productive lives and contribute positively to the country's growth. However, young parents often struggle to arrange funds for their child's treatment. Lions Cub have taken on the responsibility of sponsoring surgeries and covering the expenses for surgery and ICU care. Thanks to their efforts, all surgeries conducted so far have been successful, bringing new life and happiness to countless families.
Heartwarming Success Stories:
One particularly touching story involves a couple from Nalgonda who had been trying to have a baby for ten years. When their baby was born with CHD, the child underwent a successful surgery at just 17 days old. Overwhelmed with gratitude, the parents expressed their heartfelt appreciation to the doctors and Lions clubs, recognizing the life-saving impact of their support.
A Decade of Passionate Commitment:
For the past ten years, Lions Clubs International has been passionately providing cardiac treatment to children in need. These surgeries, conducted free of cost, have transformed the lives of countless children, allowing them to grow up as healthy individuals who can contribute positively to society. Every year, Lions Clubs International spend more than 30 lakhs, conducting over 150 surgeries to save newborn babies with CHD.
The collaboration between Lions Clubs Internationaland KIMS Hospital serves as a beacon of hope for children born with congenital heart diseases. By offering free surgeries and comprehensive care, they are ensuring that these children have a chance at a healthy and fulfilling life. The commitment and dedication displayed by Lions clubs in saving newborn lives are truly commendable. Through their selfless efforts, they are making a lasting impact on society and creating a brighter future for these children and their families.
