Plastic surgery, a super speciality treatment, has long been considered out of reach for the common man due to its high costs. However, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Lions of Hyderabad Greenlands, this life-changing procedure is now accessible to those who need it the most. With a particular focus on cleft lip repair and corrective surgeries for post-burn contractures, the Lions are providing free plastic surgeries to deserving individuals, offering them a new lease on life.

 

Saving Lives: Cleft Lip Repair and Transformation:

Children born with cleft lip and cleft palate face significant challenges from the very beginning. Inability to suckle properly can lead to malnutrition and delayed growth, and in severe cases, the entry of fluids into the lungs poses a grave risk. Understanding the dire situation these children face, the Lions have undertaken the noble task of providing free cleft lip repair surgeries. Over the past 18 years, they have collaborated with Mercy Mission, Detroit, USA, led by renowned plastic surgeon Lion Dr. Sudhershan Reddy and anesthesiologist Lion Dr. Bhavani Prasad. This collaboration has resulted in over 1 crore worth of surgeries being performed annually, not only in India but also in countries like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, impacting the lives of over 150 individuals.

 

Restoring Dignity: Post-Burn Contracture Surgeries:

Severe burns can lead to devastating contractures when the wounds heal, leaving victims with debilitating deformities. In many cases, these injuries occur due to accidents with pressure cookers, acid attacks, or other fire-related incidents. Recognizing the need to assist these individuals, the Lions have stepped forward to provide free corrective surgeries. Each year, a team of dedicated doctors from the United States arrives in India, bearing all personal expenses and bringing essential equipment. These surgeries have not only restored physical appearance but have also given victims hope and the opportunity to lead normal lives.

 

Stories of Transformation and Hope:

The impact of the Lions' plastic surgery initiative can be seen through the remarkable stories of transformation it has brought about. One young woman, a victim of acid attack, faced disfigurement and burns on her face and chest. Through successful surgeries, her deformed features were corrected, giving her a new lease on life. Another girl, who suffered from post-burn contracture of the vagina, underwent a reconstructive surgery that allowed her to lead a normal married life and eventually give birth. These heartwarming success stories, along with countless others, have been made possible through the dedication and expertise of the Lions and their collaborating medical team.

With the goal of performing up to 200 surgeries this year alone, they have already surpassed an impressive milestone of 3,000 surgeries performed to date.
